Blooming from July to August, Elymus riparius prefers part sun to part shade and moist soils. Growing 3–5' tall with a 1.5–2' above-ground spread, it provides habitat for Northern Pearly-Eye butterflies, native leaf miner moths, Brook Trout, and Wood Ducks. It is a clump-forming grass that spreads primarily by seed.
