Patch-by-Patch
Community planting projects
and mini-restorations
Plant Community LLC, a RI local nursery, is working with community organizations to increase the diversity of native plant species in their habitats, and teach community members about their local landscape. Patch-to-Patch is a program where we host a community event in a place of your choosing, plant habitat-appropriate native plants, and teach participants about their landscape. It is a cost effective way to augment the landscape by introducing or increasing the amount of plant species in a given area. Plant Community will work with you to choose the best plants for your piece of land, provide the plants, and lead the planting day with your organization's group of volunteers to execute the planting.
An ideal landscape for a patch-to-patch project might be a meadow, or forest, a trailhead clearing, or a frequently visited conservation area. The idea isn’t to completely remake the landscape but to add diversity to the existing landscape. Many of our Rhode Island forests and meadows have lost their species diversity due to a past history of farming and clearing. These plantings will both ecologically enhance the landscapes and educate people about declining local species.
Below is a pricing structure for the planting project, with options for the size of the space, the number of volunteers for the project, and the estimated hours for completion. The hours for completion and labor cost depends on the site that is being chosen.
Our Goals
To provide a hands-on educational volunteer day to build the community's connection to native plants and their landscape.
To prototype a simple, inexpensive restoration process that can be replicated in other places and by other land trusts or community organizations.
To increase the biodiversity of our protected land by planting ecologically appropriate native plants. These wildflowers will support the beauty, functionality, and habitat needs of the landscape.
