Blooming from September to October, Andropogon virginicus prefers full sun to part sun and dry to moist soils. Growing 2–4' tall with a 1.5–2' above-ground spread, it provides cover and food for Northern Bobwhites, lady beetles, bumblebee queens, and American Tree Sparrows. It is a densely tufted clump-former that spreads by prolific self-seeding.
